G&C Farms - Generations of Great Beginnings

Though Ernest Roth wasn’t raised on a farm, he was certainly raised in farm country, in Oregon’s lush and fertile Willamette Valley. When he and his brother, Henry, were grown and ready to make their own way in the world, they bought adjoining acreage in the area. They would each start a farm and raise their families as neighbors.

Ernest and his wife, Elma, originally farmed wheat, oats, barley and field corn with horse-drawn equipment. They would continue in a similar fashion until the fifties, when water would revolutionize their business. Though Oregon is well known for its plentiful supply of rainfall, the seemingly simple act of irrigating would provide new and exciting opportunities on the Roth’s farm.

With Ernest’s son Jerry home from the Army, father and son together expanded G&C to 243 acres and began irrigating the land. Suddenly, they could farm crops they never could have grown before, including green beans and sweet corn – crops that needed a controlled water supply to thrive. The Roth’s continued to purchase and irrigate additional acreage, and began a close working relationship with Truitt Brothers that continues to this day.
Today, Jerry’s son, Doug, continues the Roth family tradition. He is raising his own family in the same farmhouse that Ernest built so many years ago, when big dreams and bright beginnings grew well in the fertile soils of the Willamette Valley. For Doug, sustainable farming is just another innovative way to revolutionize their business.  He is proud to be certified by the Food Alliance and works hard to take care of his land, be fair with the people that work for him and improve his use of water and electricity.
